SURVEY: name one feature that Philippine-made products lack compared to imported ones (assuming you are comparing two products of the same category, function, etc)
they lack the appropriate study to actually compete with world brands... while artistry and ingenuity is abundant here, producers seem to overlook the behavior of the world market and its products... classic example: lack of study made possible the resurgence of brazil and other latin american countries to seal off the niche market of resort wear, which is an otherwise overlooked market before... with our great fashion and accessory designers here to produce products for such market... but its too late...
i'd say we could stand to learn how to market our goods better. we need to exert more effort to achieve stronger branding (and this includes packaging). if you think about it, we are capable of producing competitive products; it's really just a matter of asserting them. sadly, we should start believing in our products first before we could even hope to make the world appreciate them.
well, I guess self-esteem. we have to believe that our own products are really good. na world class. we must wear like a badge.
much like the indonesians, who now have implemented Batik Fridays at work. Will someone start a movement for Barong Mondays?
kailangang idevelop ang Made in Pinas as a brand. That's how Italy did it with Made in Italy in the 60s.
Also we have to create a myth about the brand - the same way italy has it for leather goods (la dolce vita), france for fashion and food (la france profonde), brazil for its beaches and tsinelas.
so what is our myth, what will be that thing that we want to communicate and make our products desirable/inviting? in other words, the product must say a story. the designer has to know about this - ang kuwento ng pilipino, ang kuwento ng pagka-pilipino
we lack DESIGN! im speaking in terms of industrial design perspective ha,most of philippine products are functional but usually take forgrant the design aspect. That is why Industrial design students usually don't have work here although there is a grave need to revamp the design needs of most of our products...walang carreer dito because for most philippine businesses , design always takes a back seat...
I used to export native bags to Mexico City and Torino, and although the Philippine-made and designed bags I purchased were of good quality, they somewhat lacked a distinct and authentic "Pinoy-ness" in terms of DESIGN - no "Pinoy Soul," so to speak.
I mean, the other bags we bought which were made in Indonesia and Thailand had it - that unique and authentic soul. Whereas one could think of Bali, the temples in Thailand and/or their respective cultures while checking bags made in those countries, the Filipino-designed ones couldn't conjure up an authentic "Filipiniana," or just plain "Philippine" feel/image.
DESIGN is very important in the international market, I believe. I like Steve Job's take on the subject of design: "Design is the fundamental soul of a man-made creation that ends up expressing itself in successive outer layers of the product."
I also agree with Irwin Cruz, the design MUST tell OUR story... "ang kuwento ng pilipino, ang kuwento ng pagka-pilipino."
